October to April: Why This is Morocco’s Peak Surf Season
When European surfers start packing their bags for Morocco, it’s usually between October and April. This 7-month window is considered the golden season for surfing in the Taghazout Bay region. Here is exactly why.
Check AvailabilityThe Science of the Winter Swell
During the European winter, massive low-pressure systems form in the North Atlantic. These storms generate powerful groundswells that travel south, marching directly into the Moroccan coastline.
Because the Taghazout Bay coastline faces Northwest, it perfectly catches these swells, organizing them into the long, perfect, right-hand point breaks Morocco is famous for.
What to Expect: Month by Month
- October & November: The warm-up. The water is still very warm from summer, but the swells become remarkably consistent. Excellent vibe, medium-sized perfect waves.
- December to February: The heavy hitters. This is when the biggest swells arrive. Spots like Anchor Point and Killer Point can hold waves up to 10-15 feet. It is a spectacle for advanced surfers. Beginners will surf sheltered spots.
- March & April: The cool down. The swells become slightly less aggressive, the weather gets warmer, and the spring energy brings a fantastic balance of fun waves and sunshine.
Is it Too Big for Beginners?
This is the biggest misconception. No, it is not too big for beginners.
While the exposed points might be huge, the beauty of the Taghazout coastline is its variety of bays and coves. When Anchor Point is massive, spots like Panoramas, Crocs, or Imsouane Bay are heavily protected, offering small, clean, organized white-water for beginners. You get the benefit of the winter energy without the danger.
