How Fit Do I Actually Need to Be to Learn Surfing?

Many people hesitate to book a surf trip because they think they aren't "athletic enough." The truth? You don't need to be an elite athlete. But a basic level of fitness will make your week much more enjoyable.

The Short Answer

If you can swim comfortably, jog lightly for 15 minutes, or do a few push-ups, you are fit enough to start learning to surf.

The Muscles You Will Actually Use

Surfing uses muscles in a very specific way that standard gym workouts don't always cover.

  • Shoulders & Back: 80% of surfing is paddling. Your shoulders will be the first thing to get tired.
  • Core: Your core keeps you stable while lying on the board and helps you bring your legs under you during the "pop-up".
  • Flexibility: The ability to fluidly move from lying down to standing up requires a bit of hip and back mobility.

Technique Beats Raw Strength

This is the most important lesson: a person with average fitness but perfect technique will catch far more waves than a bodybuilder with terrible technique.

A good coach will teach you how to position yourself on the board so the board glides, rather than forcing you to muscle your way through the water.

How to Prepare Before Your Trip

If you want to prepare 2-3 weeks before arriving, focus on:

  • Swimming: The absolute best preparation.
  • Push-ups or Burpees: Excellent for training the explosive "pop-up" motion.
  • Yoga: For hip flexibility and balance.
