The Best Time to Surf in Morocco for Beginners
Most surf magazines talk about Morocco's massive winter swells. But if you are a beginner, huge waves are exactly what you DON'T want. Here is the truth about when beginners should visit Tamraght and Taghazout.
Beginner PackagesThe Golden Rule for Beginners
As a beginner, you don't need a 3-meter swell. You need a 0.5-meter to 1-meter wave that breaks gently over a sandy bottom. You need manageable white-water to practice your pop-up safely.
The Best Months: May to October
This is widely considered the "off-season" for pro surfers, making it the absolute best season for beginners.
- The Waves: Small, gentle, and forgiving. You won't feel intimidated by the ocean.
- The Crowds: The water is much less crowded, meaning less stress and more space to make mistakes safely.
- The Weather: Warm and sunny. You can spend hours in the water without getting cold.
What About Winter (November to April)?
Can beginners surf in Morocco during the winter? Yes, absolutely.
While the main point breaks might have massive waves, the Taghazout Bay area is uniquely shaped. There are several "sheltered" spots (like Crocs, Panoramas, or Imsouane Bay) that are protected from the huge winter swells.
Even when it is huge outside, our coaches know exactly where to take you to find small, safe, beginner-friendly white-water.
Conclusion
If you want guaranteed small, easy waves and hot weather: choose May to September.
If you want a vibrant surf camp atmosphere, don't mind colder evenings, and trust the coaches to find sheltered spots: choose October to April.
